We’re thrilled to announce that Steven Lofting — an acclaimed cinematographer, director, and filmmaker — will be riding along with us for Calbreak 2025.

With his talent and passion for storytelling, Steven will be capturing every amazing moment of this final Calbreak, ensuring you have memories to relive and stories to share.

*APRIL FOOLS POST!

Saskatoon, SK – April 1, 2025 – Acclaimed film studio A24 (known for heartfelt, character-driven films like The Farewell and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) has announced it will produce a documentary chronicling the upcoming 45th and final California Breakaway (Calbreak) trip.

Each year, Calbreak’s journey is captured by a dedicated videographer, producing a heartfelt trip film that students can enjoy once they return home.

But last year’s film, crafted by videographer David Tilroe, unexpectedly made its way into the hands of Michael Landon Pearce, a producer at A24.

Pearce was captivated by the authentic relationships showcased in the film. The shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and life-changing moments that Calbreak offers stood out as something truly special. As he learned more about the Calbreak Five Star Experience, it became clear that this story was worth exploring on a larger scale.

“When I saw the footage, it felt like I was watching a powerful story of young people stepping into their purpose,” said Pearce. “The connection, the joy, the moments of growth and discovery — it was all there. And when I found out that 2025 marks the 45th and final Calbreak? The decision was easy. This story deserves to be told.”

Further research into the trip’s rich history led to another revelation: some Calbreak alumni have gone on to achieve remarkable success.

Notable former Calbreakers include Chris Getzlaf, CFL Grey Cup MVP, and Michael Eklund, a successful Hollywood actor. The film will explore other famous and successful alumni, looking back at this trip as a milestone moment in their lives.

“We’ve joked for years that Calbreak was like a real-life road trip movie,” said Corwin Thiessen, Director of Calbreak. “But now it’s actually becoming one.

Knowing that the friendships and life-changing moments we’ve experienced over 45 years will be shared with the world — it’s unbelievable.”

The film, tentatively titled Calbreak: The Last Ride, will follow students as they travel from Saskatchewan to California. The camera crew will capture moments of laughter, friendship, and reflection — from the bus ride karaoke sessions to the thrill of roller coasters at Disneyland and the iconic sunsets at Mission Beach. Of course, the legendary Calbreak dance party!

The documentary will also feature interviews with students, staff, and alumni, highlighting how Calbreak has impacted generations.

“I think every student who steps on the bus this year will be part of something historic,” Thiessen added. “And knowing their story could inspire others? That’s something really special.”

Calbreak 2025 promises to be a send-off for the ages — and now, the world will get to experience it too.
